Start NVivo and activate your license
The first time you launch NVivo, you are prompted to enter and activate your license key and create your NVivo user profile. If you have downloaded a trial version of the software, you do not need to enter a license key, but you still need to activate the trial.

Start NVivo
To start NVivo, do one of the following:

Double-click the QSR NVivo 10 icon on your desktop
- Click the Start menu, and then select All Programs>QSR>NVivo 10

Enter and activate your license (or start a 30 day trial)
When you first start NVivo you are prompted to enter and activate your license. Activation is a simple and secure process that ensures only valid licenses are used to operate the software.
If you are using a trial version of the software, you do not need to enter a key, but you must activate the trial before you can use NVivo. If you have purchased a license, you may have the option to activate your key later.
To enter and activate your license (or start a trial):

On the Welcome to NVivo 10 dialog box, enter your license key (or click 30 day trial), and then click OK.

On the License Activation dialog box, enter your details. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be completed.

Click Activate.

On the User Profile dialog box, you are prompted to set up your default NVivo user profile:

Enter the Name that you want to use in your user profile—by default, it is set to your Windows user account name.

Enter your Initials—your initials will be used to identify any work that you do in a project.

Click OK.

If activation fails because you do not have an Internet connection, you can submit an activation request to QSR International by email, mail/fax or phone—refer to How to activate when you cannot connect to the Internet for more information.

If you need a user name and password to access the Internet on your network, you may be prompted to enter your network credentials (user name and password) when activating NVivo. Contact your network administrator if you have any difficulty with your network credentials.

When you select 30 day trial, the evaluation period starts when you activate the trial. At the end of the 30 days you will not be able to use NVivo, and you will be prompted to enter a license key when you start NVivo.

You can change your User Interface Language if you have NVivo 10 for Windows Service Pack 2 (or later).

If you do not want to participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program, clear the check box.
Activate your license later
You are prompted to activate your license key when you first start NVivo. If you choose to activate later (for example, because you are not connected to the Internet at the time), you have a limited time before you must activate the license.
To activate the license

Click the File tab, point to Help, and then click Activate License.

On the License Activation dialog box, enter your details. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be completed.

Click Activate.

If you need a user name and password to access the Internet on your network, you may be prompted to enter your network credentials (user name and password) when activating NVivo. Contact your network administrator if you have any difficulty with your network credentials.
How to activate when you cannot connect to the Internet
If the activation fails because you do not have an Internet connection, you will see new options at the top of the License Activation screen—you can choose to send an activation request to QSR International by email, mail, fax or phone.
To send an activation request to QSR International:

At the top of the License Activation dialog box, click Activate via Email, or Mail/Fax or Phone.

Make sure you have entered all the required information. Fields marked with an asterisk (*) must be completed.

Click the Generate button to create an Installation Key.

Click Send or Print, and then send the activation request to QSR International by email or use the details on the printed activation request form to contact QSR International.

After QSR has processed your request, and sent you an activation key, you can activate your NVivo software—refer to Enter an activation key sent to you by QSR for details.
Enter an activation key sent to you by QSR
If you sent an activation request to QSR International by email, mail/fax or phone, then QSR International checks your activation request and sends you an activation key.
To activate your license using this key:

If you are not prompted to activate your license when you start NVivo, click the File tab, point to Help, and then click Activate License.

Select Activate via Email, Mail/Fax or Phone.

In the Activation Key field, enter the activation key you received from QSR International.

Click Activate.
If you have not already set up your default NVivo user profile, you will be prompted to do this now—refer to Create, view or change user profiles for more information.
Deactivate NVivo
You may want to deactivate the NVivo license on a particular computer. For example, if you get a new computer, then you should deactivate the NVivo license on your old computer, before installing and activating NVivo on your new computer.

Make sure that you are connected to the Internet.

If you have an NVivo project open, you must close the project before you can deactivate the license.

Click the File tab, point to Help, and then click Deactivate License.

Click Yes to confirm.
NVivo deactivates the license and displays a message to confirm that the license has been deactivated.

Click OK.
The NVivo application automatically closes.
NOTE

If you need a user name and password to access the Internet on your network, you may be prompted to enter your network credentials (user name and password) when deactivating NVivo. Contact your network administrator if you have any difficulty with your network credentials.

If you need to re-activate the license, you will need to re-enter the license key.
