Set project properties

 


Project properties are high level details and settings you can define for your NVivo project. For example, you can:

  • View or modify the project title and description
  • See when the project was created and who created it
  • View and manage project users
  • Change the paragraph styles used in document sources
  • Add or remove custom audio and video transcript fields (columns)

Project properties' settings apply to every user who accesses the project.

In server projects, all project users can view project properties, but only Project Owners can make changes—refer to About teamwork in a server project for more information.

View or change project properties

  1. Open the project.

  2. Click the File tab, point to Info, and then click Project Properties.

The Project Properties dialog box opens.

  1. You can change the settings on any tab. Detailed information about the options on each tab is provided in later sections of this topic.

  2. Click OK.

NOTE In server projects, only Project Owners can change project properties—refer to About teamwork in a server project for more information.

General tab options

On the General tab, you can view or change the project title and description, and set general options that apply to the currently open project.

Title  A name that identifies the project. The project title can be different from the project file name. You can change the project title.

Description  (Optional) A short description of the project. You can use this field to record the purpose of your project.

File name  Displays the path and file name of your project. You cannot edit the contents of this field.  

Text content language  Displays the language NVivo uses for spell checking and for Text Search queries, Word Frequency queries and pattern-based auto coding. If your source materials are in Chinese, English (UK), English (US), French, German, Japanese, Spanish or Portuguese, you should select the matching text content language. If your source materials are in any other language, you should select Other. Refer to Set the text content language and stop words for more information.

Stop Words  Stop words are words that will be ignored by Text Search queries, Word Frequency queries and pattern-based auto coding. Click this button to open the Stop Words dialog box and view the stop words associated with the currently selected Text content language. Default stop words are provided for English (UK), English (US), French, German, Spanish and Portuguese. NVivo 10 for Windows provides default stop words for Japanese (Service Pack 3 or later) and for Chinese (Service Pack 4 or later). You can add or remove stop words—refer to Set the text content language and stop words for more information.

Allow guest access  (Server projects only) Select this option to allow any user who has access to the NVivo Server to open and view your project. By default, this option is selected. Clear this option, if you want to restrict access to users who are members of a project user group—refer to About teamwork in a server project (How Project Owners control access to a server project) for more information.

Write user actions to project event log  Select this option to turn on project event logging. By default, this option is not selected. If you select this option, any project changes (items added, deleted or changed) are recorded in the event log.  

Created On/By  Displays the date and time that the project was created, and the initials of the user who created the project.

Modified On/By  Displays the date and time that the project was last modified, and the initials of the user who last modified the project.

Labels tab options

On the Labels tab, you can set the labels used within the currently open project.  To set labels for any new projects you create, refer to Set application options.

"Unassigned" attribute value label  This option displays the label that will be used for the system-created 'unassigned' attribute values in your project. If you prefer to use another term (for example, 'Blank'), you can change the label—you must choose a term that is unique among attribute values. Click Reset, to restore the default setting for this label.

"Not Applicable" attribute value label  This option displays the label that will be used for the system-created 'Not Applicable' attribute value in your project. If you prefer to use another term (for example, 'Irrelevant'), you can change the label—you must choose a term that is unique among attribute values. Click Reset, to restore the default setting for this label.

"Associated" relationship type label  This option displays the label that will be used for the system-created 'Associated' relationship type in your project. If you prefer to use another label (for example, 'Related'), you can change the label. Click Reset, to restore the default setting for this label.

Passwords tab options

The Passwords tab is only available when you are working in a standalone project.

You can set the Read/Write password—this provides full access to the project. When you have set the Read/Write password, you can optionally set the Read Only password that allows users to read but not update the project.

Read/Write Password

Password  This password permits full access to the project. You can enter up to twelve alpha-numeric characters (the password is not case-sensitive). Click Clear to remove the password.

Confirm Password  Enter the password again to ensure it is correct.

Password Hint  Enter a description to remind you of your password. For example, the name of my first pet.

Read Only Password

Password  This password permits read only access to the project. You can enter up to twelve alpha-numeric characters (the password is not case-sensitive). Click Clear to remove the password.

Users tab options

The Users tab allows you to manage project user profiles—for more information refer to Manage users in a standalone project or Manage users in a server project.

Users

The Users sub-tab lists all users who have modified the project.

Name  Displays the name of the user. In standalone projects, the name is created from the user's default NVivo user profile. In server projects, the name is created from the user's Windows user account. You cannot change this name.

Initials  Displays the initials of the user. In standalone projects, these initials are first created from the user's default NVivo user profile. In server projects, the initials are first created from the user's Windows user account. You can change the initials.

Account Name  (Server projects only) Displays the user's Windows user account name. You cannot change this account name.

Connected  (Server projects only) Indicates whether the user is currently connected to the project. You cannot change this setting.

Color  Displays the color assigned to the user. Assigning a unique color to a user can help you to identify the user in coding stripes.

Selected user is a member of  (Server projects only) Displays the project user groups to which the selected user belongs.

Groups (server projects only)

The Groups sub-tab allows you to manage user access in a server project. There are three project user groups—each project user group has a different level of access to the project. Refer to About teamwork in a server project (Group permissions: Readers, Contributors and Project Owners) for more information.

Project User Groups  Lists the three project user groups—Readers, Contributors, and Project Owners. When you select a project user group from this list, you can view or modify the group's membership.

Group Members  Displays a list of the users who are members of the selected project user group. Click Add to add a user to the selected group. Click Remove to remove the selected user from the group.

Paragraph Styles tab options

On the Paragraph Styles tab, you can define paragraph styles that will apply to new documents, memos and externals in the currently open project (existing sources are not changed). To change the paragraph styles available in any new projects you create, refer to Set application options.

Available paragraph styles are listed on the left. The properties of a selected style are listed on the right (Name, Font, Size, Color, Bold, Italic, and Underline). You can see how a paragraph style will look in the preview box.

NVivo has system-defined styles; Heading 1 to Heading 9, Normal, Title and Plain Text. You cannot remove these styles but you can modify their properties—for example, change the font size or color.

You can add your own custom styles.

  • Click New Style to add a new custom style.

  • Click Remove to remove the selected paragraph style. You cannot remove system-defined paragraph styles.

Reset Style  Click this button to reset the selected system-defined paragraph style to its default setting. You cannot reset custom paragraph styles.

Reset System Styles  Click this button to reset all system-defined paragraph styles to their default settings for font, size, color, bold, italic and underline.

Model Styles tab options

On the Model Styles tab, you can define styles for model shapes that will apply to new models in the currently open project (existing models are not changed). To change the model styles available in any new projects you create, refer to Set application options.

Available model styles are listed on the left. The properties of a selected style are listed on the right (Name, Font, and Fill Color). You can see how a model style will look in the preview box.

NVivo has one system-defined model style; the Default style. You cannot remove this style but you can modify its properties—for example, change the font size or fill color.

You can add your own custom styles.

  • Click New Style to add a new custom style.

  • Click Remove to remove a selected model style. You cannot remove the Default style.

Reset Style Click this button to reset the Default style to its default settings for text style, line style and fill color.

Audio/Video tab options

On the Audio/Video tab, you can set audio/video options for the currently open project. To change options for any new projects you create, refer to Set application options.

Settings

Embed media in project if file size less than ( ) MB  This option displays your audio and video media storage preferences.  Select this option, if you want to embed media files in your project. Clear this option, if you do not want to embed media files in the project. By default, media files less than 20MB are embedded. You can change the file size setting—for example, you could choose to embed larger files or embed only very small files. In standalone projects, you can embed files up to 40MB in size. In server projects, you can embed files up to 100MB in size. Refer to Store audio and video files for more information.

Custom Transcript Fields

This area of the dialog box lists any audio or video custom transcript fields (columns) that are set up in your project. By default, projects contain only the Timespan and Content fields.

You can add custom transcript fields to your audio or video sources. For example, if you add the field Speaker to your audio sources, the Speaker field will be available on all audio sources in your project.

Click the Audio or Video tab, to view or change the custom transcript fields available in audio or your video sources:

  • Click the New button, to add a custom transcript field.

  • Click the Remove button, to remove a selected custom transcript field. If you remove a custom field that contains content (text), the content is removed from your project.

  • Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to reorder the custom transcript fields— the order from top to bottom represents the order the fields are displayed from left to right.

On the Framework Matrices tab, you can set the default text style that will apply to new summaries you create within framework matrices in the currently open project (existing summaries are not changed).

The properties of the default summary style are listed—Name, Font, Size, Color, Bold, Italic, and Underline. You can modify these properties and see how summary text will look in the preview box.

Reset Style Click this button to reset the summary text style to the default settings.

On the Social media dataset tab, you can restrict the amount of biographical information that is imported from NCapture files containing Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or YouTube data.

By default, all captured biographical information is imported. Select or clear the check boxes to include or exclude particular fields, as shown in the following table:

Other information about the user, such as Industry (for LinkedIn) or Number of Followers (Twitter) is always imported.

* Location information for video authors and commenters is no longer captured due to changes in the YouTube API.
