Keyboard shortcuts

 


The keyboard shortcuts that are described in this topic refer to the U.S. keyboard layout. Keys on other keyboard layouts might not correspond exactly to the keys on a U.S. keyboard.

For keyboard shortcuts in which you press two or more keys simultaneously, the keys to press are separated by a plus sign (+).

Common tasks

To do this Press

Undo previous action.

CTRL+Z

Select all—for example, all items in a list, all text in a source, or an entire image.  

CTRL+A

Copy selected text or project item. CTRL+C
Paste text or project item. CTRL+V

Cut selected text or project item.

CTRL+X

Delete selected text or project item.

DELETE

Open a project.

CTRL+O

Print project item.

CTRL+P

Export project item.

CTRL+SHIFT+E

Save the project.

CTRL+S

Create a new project.

CTRL+N

Switch between edit mode and read-only mode (for sources and models open in Detail View).

CTRL+E

Move from selected 'codable' content in Detail View to the Quick Coding bar (and back).

CTRL+Q

Get Help.

Refresh the NVivo workspace (Navigation View, List View and Detail View).

F5

Import a new Internal source (document, PDF, audio, video or picture).

Cancel a process such as a query or report.

Navigate the project

To do this Press
Open the Sources folder. CTRL+1
Open the Nodes folder.

CTRL+2

Open the Classifications folder. CTRL+3
Open the Collections folder. CTRL+4
Open the Queries folder. CTRL+5
Open the Reports folder. CTRL+6
Open the Models folder. CTRL+7
Show all folders in Navigation View. CTRL+8

Show or hide Navigation View.

ALT+F1

Open the selected project item.

CTRL+SHIFT+O

Display the properties of the selected project item.

CTRL+SHIFT+P

Open the memo that is linked to the selected project item.

CTRL+SHIFT+M

Move between Navigation View, List View, Detail View, Find bar, and Quick Coding bar

CTRL+TAB
Move from selected 'codable' content in Detail View to the Quick Coding bar (and back). CTRL+Q
Find text in sources and nodes. CTRL+F

Go to a specified point in a source or a node—for example, a paragraph, an annotation or a transcript row.

Advanced Find—find project items that meet specific criteria.

Work with text

Many of these shortcuts are only available when a source is open in edit mode.

To do this Press
Find text in sources and nodes. CTRL+F

Replace text. 

CTRL+H

Apply bold to selected text.

CTRL+B

Apply italics to selected text.

CTRL+I

Apply an underline to selected text.

CTRL+U

Insert a page break within a document, external or memo.

CTRL+ENTER

Insert date and time.

CTRL+SHIFT+T

Insert a symbol.

CTRL+SHIFT+Y

Check spelling in documents, memos and other editable sources, and in annotations.

Select text

To do this Press

Extend or decrease a text selection by one or more characters.

Hold down SHIFT and then press the RIGHT or LEFT arrow to extend or decrease your selection by one or more characters.

Select a single word.

Double-click anywhere in the word.

Select a whole paragraph.

Triple-click anywhere in the paragraph (not available in PDF sources).

Select a single line of text.

In PDF sources, triple-click anywhere in the line.

In other source types, click in the line, then press HOME to move to the start of the line, and then hold down SHIFT+END.

Select multiple lines of text.

Select the first line, and then hold down SHIFT and use the DOWN and UP arrows to extend the selection to one or more lines immediately below or above.
Extend a text selection to the beginning of:
  • A paragraph in documents, PDFs, memos or externals
  • A cell in media transcripts, picture logs and datasets

Extend a text selection to the end of:
  • A paragraph in documents, PDFs, memos or externals
  • A cell in media transcripts, picture logs and datasets

CTRL+SHIFT+DOWN ARROW

Extend a text selection to the beginning of:
  • A document, PDF, memo or external
  • A cell in media transcripts, picture logs and datasets

CTRL+SHIFT+HOME

Extend a text selection to the end of:
  • A document, PDF, memo or external
  • A cell in media transcripts, picture logs and datasets

Work with framework matrices

To do this Press
Create a new summary link that connects text in a framework matrix cell to selected content displayed in the associated view. CTL+L

Move from the current matrix cell to the associated view.

ALT+RIGHT ARROW

Move from the associated view to the previously selected cell in the matrix.

ALT+LEFT ARROW

Switch edit mode ON or OFF for the current framework matrix cell.

Work with tabular content (for example, transcripts, tables, datasets, and node matrices)

The shortcuts available vary depending of the type of project item you are working with in Detail View—for example, you cannot insert a row in datasets and matrices.
